By Financial Secretary Lois Rizzi
March 16, 2021

On Saturday, March 13th, The Putnam Valley Vol Fire Department responded to a call for smell of smoke in the area of Peekskill Hollow Road and the Taconic State Parkway. Upon further investigation, the initial team of firefighters discovered a working brush fire making its way up the power lines, spreading quickly with the gusts of wind hitting upwards of 20-30mph. The fire was extremely hot, smokey with flames reaching over 10 feet in some areas. The First attack crew on scene working on a fire line in a effort to contain the rapidly spreading fire. This was difficult as the wind kept blowing and the fire continued to jump the fire line. Command mobilized additional departments and personal for assistance, as well as additional UTV vehicles to transport personnel equipment and water to the fire ground.

After 4 hours, the fire was under control and personnel were off the mountain just after dark.

A Thank You and shout out to the mutual aid departments who were there with members, trucks, equipment and ATVs.

At the peak of the fire, there was 7 mutual aid companies on site, 2 companies on standby at Putnam Valley and Continental Village respectively, NYS Forrest, Park Rangers and Putnam Valley Ambulance.

Mutual Aid in no particular order:

Yorktown Fire Department

Continental Village Fire Department

Montrose Fire Department

North Highlands

East Fishkill Fire Department

Carmel Fire Department
