| Today, the Putnam Valley Vol. Fire Department and its members, paused to honor the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting our freedoms deserve our deepest gratitude.
We had the distinct honor of welcoming Nils E. Mockler, a survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima, whose presence moved all in attendance. Mr. Mockler shared reflections on his time in the Marines, offering a powerful reminder of the resilience and commitment that define our veterans. Private First-Class Nils Edward Mockler, a U.S. Marine, joined the Marines at age 18, in 1944, serving as an intelligence scout and fighting on both Iwo Jima and Saipan. He talked about the grueling Battle of Iwo Jima and how he saw the American flag raised atop Mount Suribachi, a scene made famous by Joe Rosenthal’s photograph.
We also proudly recognize one of our own members, Frank Rush IV, a United States Marine, as he stands alongside Nils E. Mockler in a powerful display of a time-honored tradition passed from generation to generation.
On this Veterans Day, take a moment to reflect, to thank, and to honor. Freedom isn’t free — and we owe so much to those who’ve worn the uniform.
